The Method Marketing

Sources + Methodology

What is measured, what is modeled, and why the range gets small.

The top of the comparison uses public datasets. The lower tiers are directional estimates based on progressively rarer combinations of capability. We publish the distinction because false precision would make the graphic less credible, not more.

How to read the numbers

There is no official U.S. registry for every company that calls itself a marketing agency. Definitions also overlap across advertising, marketing consulting, digital agencies, web firms, sales consulting, software development, and related categories.

For that reason, the comparison starts with a broad market range, uses the Census employer count as a hard reality check, and then applies increasingly strict capability filters. The middle and lower tiers are modeled estimates, not government statistics.

The point is not that firm number 26 is somehow disqualified. The point is that the intersection of business strategy, marketing execution, sales systems, CRM/process work, analytics, custom technology, AI, and direct owner execution is materially rarer than the generic term "marketing agency" suggests.

Tier methodology

Broad marketing / advertising universe

100,000–150,000

Directional range triangulated from large commercial directories and registry-style datasets. It intentionally includes many small, specialized, and loosely defined firms because the top tier is meant to represent the broad market using agency language.

Established, staffed agencies

12,000–16,000

Anchored to the U.S. Census employer-establishment count for advertising agencies. The range allows for classification differences between advertising, marketing consulting, digital services, and adjacent categories.

Integrated, multi-discipline agencies

2,000–4,000

Modeled estimate for firms with credible execution across several major marketing disciplines rather than a single specialty. Public multidisciplinary agency directories provide a useful scale check, but no official registry measures this exact capability set.

Business strategy + growth capability

400–1,200

Modeled subset requiring the firm to work above the campaign level and directly address positioning, growth strategy, revenue problems, or business-level decisions.

Sales + revenue-process integration

75–300

Modeled subset requiring meaningful work across marketing and sales, including conversion, follow-up, CRM/process design, sales enablement, or business-development systems.

Custom software + AI + automation capability

15–75

Modeled subset requiring the ability to build or materially implement custom software, automation, integrations, or AI systems in addition to strategy, marketing, and sales work.

Owner-executed across the entire stack

5–25

Final modeled range requiring all prior capabilities plus direct principal involvement in diagnosis, strategy, execution, and client work. This is the rarest filter and is intentionally presented as an estimate, not a census count.

Primary public sources

U.S. Census Bureau, NAICS 541810 Advertising Agencies

The 2023 County Business Patterns profile reports 15,512 employer establishments in NAICS 541810. Census also classifies marketing consulting separately, which matters when comparing a traditional advertising agency with a broader business-growth firm.

DesignRush, U.S. digital marketing and digital agency directories

Its October 2026 directory lists 9,467 U.S. digital marketing companies, while its broader multidisciplinary digital-agency directory lists 2,197 firms. Those counts help illustrate how quickly the population changes as capability requirements become stricter.

What would change the estimate?

Better national data, a materially different definition of "agency," or credible evidence that substantially more firms combine all seven capability layers would change the range. We would rather revise the estimate than defend a number that the evidence no longer supports.
